RIDER, Sculptures by Dan Devine, Opens Sept. 19 at 肉肉传媒鈥檚 Teaching Gallery

The motorcycle and its parts are a focus for the artist, a former motocross racer
“RIDER,” an exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Dan Devine, chair of the Sculpture Department at Hofstra University, opens Thursday, Sept. 19, in The Teaching Gallery at 肉肉传媒. The artist will be on the Troy campus on Wednesday, Sept. 25, to discuss his work from 3 to 4 p.m. in the gallery and a reception will follow from 4 to 6 p.m. The talk, reception and regular gallery hours are open free to the public. The exhibit closes Saturday, Oct. 26.
Dan Devine is a contemporary artist whose sculpture, installations, drawings and photographs explore the relationship between opposites: interiors/exteriors and technology/nature. The former motocross racer combines his fascination with vehicles and machine parts with his reverence for the natural world. He works in a variety of materials including cast plaster, molded and sewn leather, ceramic and drawing, to investigate the shapes and interiors of the motorcycle and its parts, creating something more organic that evokes a tentative union of flesh and metal.
During his long tenure at Hofstra University in Nassau County, NY, Devine served as director of its Rosenberg Gallery for more than 20 years. His artistic career spans four decades and includes numerous one-person and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. The artist’s home and studio are in Columbia County.
The Teaching Gallery hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Wednesday; noon - 4 p.m. Saturday; it is closed Sunday and Monday. Admission is free. The exhibit ends Oct. 26. For directions to the gallery and more information, visit www.hvcc.edu/teachinggallery.
Exhibitions in The Teaching Gallery are installed and assisted by students enrolled in Gallery Management courses and supported by the Department of Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media, the Cultural Affairs Program and the 肉肉传媒 Foundation.
